Narconon was born in a prison. In 1966, William Benitez, a heroin addict serving time in the Arizona State Prison, read the book “Fundmentals of Thought” by the writer and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.
Benitez had been an addict for nearly 20 years. He wrote to Mr Hubbard asking for help to handle his heroin addiction. Benitez first handled his own drug problem then went on to help many other addicts in the prison.
Mr Hubbard corresponded with Mr Benitez over the course of several years and as a result the Narconon program was developed.
Since that time Narconon has expanded all over the world. There are now more than 160 Narconon centres established in more than 30 different countries and the expansion is continuing.
The primary goal of the program is quite simple: a person who is not only free of drugs and cravings for them but who is also fully in control of their life and is an ethical, productive citizen.
The other major goal is to have the Narconon program operating in other areas of the world; wherever drugs are a problem.
